1950年代に設立されて以来、多くの名曲を生み出してきた名門フェイム・スタジオ（FAME＝Florence Alabama Music Enterprises）ってのがあって。
そこでハウス・ミュージシャンとして膨大なレコーディングに関わってきたバリー・ベケット（キーボード）、ロジャー・ホーキンス（ドラム）、ジミー・ジョンソン（ギター）、デイヴィッド・フッド（ベース）が独立し、1969年4月、シェフィールドに新設したのがマッスル・ショールズ・サウンド・スタジオだった、と。
“ザ・スワンパーズ”などとも呼ばれた彼ら腕利きリズム・セクションが専属でいたこともあって設立当初から大いに話題を集め、以降、1979年に移転のために閉鎖されてしまうまで、サザン・ソウル系のアーティストはもちろん、ロック／ポップス系のアーティストも含めて実に幅広いジャンルのアーティストにごきげんなグルーヴを提供してきた。
