【雑感】
もうすぐバレンタインデー…由来を調べてみると、
According to the folklore Valentines Day originated from
the feast Lupercalia. The Romans prayed to their god Lupercus
to keep the wolves away from their animals. February 15 was
the day they dedicated to him and thus held their feast.
This was their spring festival. Later， Claudius II， deemed
"Claudius the Cruel，" outlawed marriage for his soldiers in
fear that if they were married， they would want to stay at
home rather than be loyal soldiers.
Valentine， a Roman priest secretly and illegally married
soldiers and their brides. After time， Valentine’s clandestine
actions were discovered， and he was sentenced to death.
He was beheaded on Feb. 14， 269 A.D.， the eve of
Lupercalia. In 496 A.D. as Rome became more Christian，
Valentine was named a saint and the feast was changed to Feb.14
to honor St. Valentine.

バレンタインデーは元々、古代ローマのLupercalia （多産・豊穣の神）を祭る日
に由来している。ローマでは当時獰猛な狼どもが村をうろついていた。人々は、
神様 Lupercaliaに助けを乞い、狼を追い出すようお願いする。そしてその神様
Lupercaliaを祭る日が２月１５日だった。ローマの人達は、その日を春祭りとし
てお祝いした。
　バレンタイン（ラテン名ヴァレンティヌス : Valentinus）は、ローマの僧だ
ったが、キリスト教に改宗した。当時ローマではキリスト教は新興宗教だっ
た。そして、皇帝クラウディウスが富国強兵のため若者の結婚を禁じていた
時（結婚や婚約をしていると、戦いに支障をきたす）、ヴァレンタインが若者達
を密かに結婚させていたため、これを知った皇帝は怒り、彼を投獄してしまった。
　そのバレンタインは、 Lupercaliaを祭るローマの祭日の１日前、そう２月１４
日に処刑されてしまう。彼の死後、ローマでキリスト教徒が増えるにしたがって、
聖職者が春祭りの行われる２月１５日を２月１４日へと変えてしまった！そし
て、今日ではLupercalia を崇める代わりに、Valentineを崇めるようになった。
