Pattersonとはまた違った面白さ。

知らない単語は結構あるけれど、知らないまま飛ばすことが苦痛ではない。
だから、読みやすく感じているのかもしれない。


遺伝子組み換えの軍事プロジェクトにより
人為的に作られた生き物が研究所から脱走した。
1つは、人間の言葉を解する愛すべきゴールデン・レトリーバー。
そしてもう1つは、醜く残虐な生き物。
醜い生き物は人外的存在ということで、The Outsider と呼ばれている。

犬は人生に絶望した男Travisに拾われ、Einsteinと名付けられる。
Travisはこの犬がきっかけで、引きこもり生活をしていた内気な女性Noraと知り合う。
二人ははEinsteinのおかげで親密さを増し、人生への希望を取り戻す。

殺し屋Vinceは、ソビエトに雇われて、
遺伝子組み換えプロジェクトの研究者を次々殺害する。
同じくソビエトの意向により、研究所は放火され灰と化す。

EinsteinがTravisのところで大切にされている頃、
OutsiderはEinsteinを追いかけて、北上を続けていた。
次々と動物や人を襲いながら。
Outsiderの被害者は、みな目がくりぬかれているのだった。

NSAの捜査官Lemは国防を背負って情報統制をしきながら、
この事件の捜査に当たっていた。


って感じで、登場人物が結構多くて、多角的に話が進む。

やっぱり一番の見どころは、Einsteinでしょう。
とにかく、賢くて可愛いのだ。
NoraとEinsteinのやりとりは、微笑ましくてホットする。

Travisは、出生時に母を亡くし、その後事故で父も亡くし、
軍に入ったものの所属した隊は彼を残して壊滅し、
とにかく自分に関わる人、自分が愛する人はみな命を失う運命を背負っていた。
私は死なないと言ってくれた妻も、結婚後10か月で癌に倒れた・・・

Travisが運命に翻弄されるさまは、
"Life Expectancy"をかなり彷彿とさせる。

"Life Expectancy"の感想に私は「アメリカ的だ」と書いていたけれど、
"Watchers"でも同じように最後は運命に勝つのだと思う。
それはそれで気分よく読めていいかな。

最後に、EinsteinとOutsiderが幸せになれればいいのだけれど。





三井住友銀行からハガキがきた。
Webからの繰り上げ返済の対応時間が延長になるとのこと。

今までは平日の9時から15時のみだったのが、
週末も含めて24時間可能になる。

素晴らしい。

上の本は前に読んだ「月の扉」に出てきた
座間味くんが出てくるのでチョイス。

特に面白くもなかったかなぁ。惜しい。

下の本は、結局読み終えずに半分ほど読んだところで
図書館に返してしまったけれど、
なかなか興味深かった。

今は他にも読んでいる本があるし、
何となく読む時間を見つけられなかったのだけれど。

人間本来の自然治癒力のお話。

多分、病気とかで困ったら、
また読む気になるかもしれない。

「治りたい」って誰でも思ってると思うのね。
病気の人はみんな。

自らの治癒力を発揮できる人もいるし、
