Mt. Fuji is the Symbol of Japan
Mt. Fuji that is located in the center of the Japanese archipelago is the highest mountain (3776 meters=12388.45 feet) in Japan. There are not higher mountains around Mt. Fuji, so people have a distant view of it, also from the Pacific Ocean. Moreover, the greatly beautiful shape of Mt. Fuji has shown the different scenery by seasons, weather and hours. Therefor, many artists, amateur painters and photographers have taken it to be an object for long time, also it is printed on bill. On the other hand, although Mt. Fuji has beautiful shape, it is a dangerous silent volcano. It is no wonder if Mt. Fuji erupts at any time, because it is on the biggest active fault. In deed, until Edo era (1600-1867), Mt. Fuji has repeatedly - last time was in 1707. Whenever it had erupted, it immersed a radius of approximately 200 miles in volcanic ash, and the ash had been blown up covered the sky for many months. As a result, mighty famines eventuated from the eruptions. Consequently, people have hoped that being calm of Mt. Fuji since ancient, and they have been consecrating it as a god of Shinto, that is traditional religion in Japan. From those two reasons, Mt. Fuji has meanings, "No. 1" and "luck". In addition, in modern, the area that has Mt. Fuji in the center, include five lakes where the foot of Mt. Fuji is a national park. From perspective of geology, meteorology, biology and botany, Mt. Fuji is a valuable mountain and still has many enigmas. For example, in the sea of trees in the foot of it, there must be a lot of unknown caves, and a compass does not work there, thus, the many dead were discovered. Furthermore, researchers of national universities have been observing volcanic activity to predict eruptions and earthquakes. All in all, Mt. Fuji, that have been loved, honored and awed, is suitable for the symbol of Japan indeed.
